Our Descendants of Pt. Lookout POW Organization can provide program speakers on Pt. Lookout's conditions and treatment of its prisoners of war. Each person gives a different Point Lookout presentation. Our speakers do not charge to give you a program; however, if one of our speakers has to travel any great distance to your place of meeting, they may ask to be compensated with a personal donation of gas money. Thanks!

Clad in Confederate uniform, William gives a rousing Pt. Lookout program that will capture your attention as you learn not only the treatment of Pt. Lookout's prisoners, the condition of its camp, it's water & non food supply, but will also present a history on Southern Vs northern camps as far as deaths and percentages... complete with show-n-tell! William has been vigorously working on our "Missing Names Project" ...the federal government only gave us a list of 3384 names of those who perished while imprisoned at Pt. Lookout, yet prisoners' diaries proclaim that as many as 14,000 died there...and William has found many of their names! Hear his story of this enormous tedious search!

James served twenty-five years in the USAF & Army National Guard, acquiring a love of military history and high respect for those who serve their country. James' presentation is on the GA Prisoners of War who were held captive/perished at Pt. Lookout. His own ancestor was Cpl. William C. Stallings, Co. B, 45th GA Inf. James has also authored a book on these brave Confederate soldiers, along with all the other GA men who left their homes to defend their cherished South Land from a northern invader. He can bring/autograph his books (complete with all GA soldiers who died while POWs in United States prisons and hospitals) for you after his program!

Donald has a deep Confederate heritage that includes 65 documented Confederate ancestors of which 17 North Carolinians were held as prisoners of war at Pt. Lookout. One of them perished as a POW and is buried at Pt. Lookout.
Donald is a member of our Lee’s Miserables POW Reenactors, portraying John J. Omenhausser. Donald’s program: John Jacob Omenhausser, Point Lookout Prisoner of War Artist, 1864-1865. From German descent, born in Philadelphia, PA, John Jacob Omenhausser was a twenty-nine year old widowed resident of Richmond, VA when he enlisted as a private on April 21, 1861 in the 46th Virginia Co.A. John Omenhausser’s name appears in a context clearly identifying him as the artist of the four sketch books containing 201 known renderings. Many of John’s sketches depict camp life and there’s usually someone cooking, whether there’s an abundance of food at the onset of the war or meager portions of rats during his imprisonment.
This program uses John’s sketches to bring to life the story of Point Lookout.

James' program is on Lt. Peter Goodwin Benton who was with the 11th MO Inf. After leaving Pt. Lookout, he went on to be one of the Immortal 600. Lt. Benton was in several POW camps, as well as a federal hospital where he was fed horsemeat. After the war, Lt. Benton always took his Confederate uniform with him, for fear that he would die and be buried in a blue suit. Among his papers discovered after his death, was a senate bill proving that he was entitled to "reparations" from the fed. government, due to inhumane prison treatment!

Fred Taylor knows the history of Point Lookout, having been with us since just before his 13th birthday! He’s also a member of our Lee’s Miserables POW Reenactors, as well as an accomplished guitarist. He has documented 15 NC ancestors who were POWs in Pt. Lookout. One was a Corporal and 3 were Sergeants. They ranged in age from just 14 to 37 years old. One of them perished as a POW and is buried at Pt. Lookout. Fred’s program will bring to life the conditions of the pen and those who were there! Fred is majoring in law, so if you want the U. S. government's politics (H.R. #97) behind POW exchange, this is also a very interesting topic! |

He has done extensive research on what was done to the prisoners at Point Lookout and is also most knowledgeable on the endangerment to Southern Heritage today. Stephen's program includes the imprisonment of Pvt. Gordon Repass who was originally with the Home Guard, but soon mustered into service with the 1st VA Inf. He was in his forties and had a family of six children. He was captured at Saylers Creek, where he fought alongside one of his sons. He died while imprisoned in Pt. Lookout. His nephew, John P. Sharitz was also imprisoned here and it was he who wrote the letter back home of his uncle's death. While Pvt. Gordon had been away fighting for his homeland, the yankees entered his home town and burned/looted his and his neighbors homes/barns and their church.
